The Festival has a friendly atmosphere and our aim is to encourage amateur performers in the performance of the arts, particularly in music and in speech. We are justly proud that Kathleen Ferrier and Amanda Roocroft competed at the Festival before they became famous.
Founded by members of the Lytham Congregational Church Choir, the first “Grand Competition Festival” was held on October 12th, 1901. Around the start of the 20th century, a number of Civic Societies were formed, many following the initiative of Churches and their members. By 1904, the programme shows there were over 1000 competitors including 10 male voice choirs.
